Gladstone Psychiatry & Wellness on WJZ: Understanding Our Maryland DBT Program
We’re excited to share insights from our recent WJZ TV interview, where Nicole Roder, LCSW-C, from our Maryland DBT Program discussed our comprehensive approach to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and how we’re helping Marylanders build lives worth living.
What Is DBT and Who Can It Help?
DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy, a highly effective, evidence-based treatment that helps people with borderline personality disorder and others struggling with intense emotional pain. Our Maryland DBT program works with individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts, engaging in self-harm behaviors, or having difficulty controlling their emotions and behaviors. These are often people who feel completely overwhelmed by their emotions and don’t know how to cope.
Many of our clients come to us after trying other types of therapy that haven’t worked for them. We understand that we’re often their last hope, and the amazing thing is that DBT really works. It helps people build lives that actually feel worth living.
How Our Maryland DBT Program Differs from Traditional Therapy
What makes DBT unique is our completely non-judgmental approach. We understand that all behaviors, even destructive ones, happen for a reason. Instead of judging or blaming, we focus on understanding what’s causing these behaviors and teaching better, skillful alternatives.
Our Maryland DBT program has a comprehensive structure that you don’t find in typical therapy. Clients participate in individual therapy sessions with their therapist and attend weekly group skills training where they learn concrete tools for managing distress, regulating emotions, and improving relationships. We also provide 24-hour phone coaching, which means clients can call their therapist between sessions when they’re struggling to use their skills in real-life situations. It’s intensive, and that’s what makes it so effective.
What Makes Gladstone’s Program Special
We’re proud that our program is certified by the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification. This means we went through an extensive evaluation process with Dr. Marsha Linehan’s organization—she’s the psychologist who created DBT—and they determined that we’re providing DBT with high fidelity to her original model. Our program director and several of our therapists are also individually certified. This certification matters because it ensures our clients are getting adherent, effective treatment.
We see adults and adolescents age 14 and up. What’s also really important is that we accept insurance, and some insurance plans actually cover our entire program with no additional cost to the patient beyond their copay, coinsurance, and deductible. Other plans cover part of the program with some out-of-pocket costs. Our goal is to make treatment as affordable as possible.
Recovery Is Possible Through DBT
We want people to know that recovery is possible, even when it feels hopeless. DBT requires a lot of work from both the therapist and the client. It’s not easy, and it’s absolutely worth it because we see people completely turn their lives around. People who come to us feeling like they can’t go on learn to build lives they actually want to live.
If someone is struggling with intense emotions, self-harm, or suicidal thoughts, they don’t have to suffer alone. There is effective help available, and we’re here to provide it.
